This stove top white rice recipe has a slight difference than your typical white rice. With the substitution of chicken broth instead of water, this stove top white rice has extra nutrients and protein.

My husband and I use stove top white rice has a side very often to our meals. Whether we are using it alongside sticky chicken thighs, bacon meatloaf, or salmon patties. It is a simple yet delicious and versatile side dish.
With how much we use it, I've been wondering if there is a way to make it a bit healthier and more nourishing. With being a busy mom, I am always trying to find way to up my protein and get the most nourishment I can out of each bite. You too?
With that being said, substituting the water that the rice is cooked in for chicken broth helps with that. Chicken broth (especially homemade) is packed with so many nutrients and health benefits. Some of these include supporting immune function, improving joint health, promoting gut health, strengthening our bones, and enhancing skin health. Chicken broth is healing.
With our stove top white rice being cooked in chicken broth instead of water means that the rice is soaking up all those benefits from the chicken broth. Which also means we are getting those nourishments one bite of this rice at a time!
Not only is this rice nourishing, but it is fluffy and has a slight creaminess to it. Let's make stove top white rice together!
How to Make White Rice on the Stove

To start, in a medium size pot, add in the white rice and the chicken broth.
Place the white rice and chicken broth on your stove top on high. Allow the mixture to come to a rolling boil.
Once the chicken broth is boiling, turn the burner down to medium (a 5) and cock the lid well. You'll know the lid is cocked enough when no water boils out over. This makes it easy to walk away from the rice and not needing to run back because water is spilling out. Allow the mixture to keeping boiling with the cocked lid until the liquid is almost out.
Once there is just a bit of liquid bubbling around the rice, turn the burner off and fully place the lid on top of the pot. Allow the rest of the liquid to evaporate off.

Once fully evaporated, add butter and salt to the top of the rice and use a fork to fluff the rice while also stirring in the butter and salt.
Serve immediately!
Tips to Make This Recipe
- Be careful to not allow the rice to be on the medium burner for too long before turning it off. If it is on too long, the bottom of the rice will stick to the pan or become burnt.
- You know it is time to turn the burner off when you can turn it off and close the lid and no liquid boils out.
- When using a fork to fluff the rice, be careful to not stir too much. Stirring to much can turn your rice into mush.

Notes
For this recipe I used long grain white rice. Other kinds of white rice will work as well, just keep in mind the outcomes may be different for those kinds.
When using a fork to fluff the rice, make sure you are simply fluffing and not stirring. Stirring the rice can cause it to become mushy and lose its shape/look.
This recipe uses chicken broth for extra flavor and nourishment. However, use the same measurements for cooking rice in water and the result is just as good!
Whether you use salted or unsalted butter will cause the amount of salt you add in to be more or less. I use salted butter for this recipe.
Stove Top White Rice FAQs
What is the ratio of white rice to water on the stove?
It has taken more than a few times, but I have mastered the right ratio of liquid to rice. You always want 1 ¼ cup MORE than the amount of rice you have. So, if you have 1 cup of rice, you want 2 ¼ cup of liquid. This will ensure perfectly done and fluffy rice.
What are the 4 steps of cooking rice?
There are 4 simple steps to cooking rice. Step one is to add the rice and liquid to a medium sized pot and place on the stove on high and bring to a rolling boil. Once boiling, step 2, turn the burner from high to medium and really cock the lid. Once there are just a few bubbles coming up over the rice, turn the burner off and place the lid on the pot. Allow the liquid to evaporate off. The last step, step 4, is to fluff the rice with a fork!
How to get fluffy rice every time?
The key to getting fluffy rice is to have the right rice to liquid ratio. Having that 1 ¼ cup more liquid than rice will ensure you get that! Another key to fluffy rice is making sure all the liquid is dissolved before serving. Lastly, fluff the rice with a fork just before serving. Careful not to stir the rice when fluffing.
Can you use butter instead of oil when making rice?
We love adding butter to our rice to add richness and flavor! Simply add in a tablespoon of butter to your rice then fluff it with a fork to distribute the butter. Once you add butter to your cooked rice and taste the flavor, you'll never go back! When it comes to what kind of butter, salted or unsalted will work. Adjust salt accordingly to whatever you use.
