Each year, my husband and I get a quarter of a cow from our local butcher. This means we get about 40 pounds of ground beef. It can be hard to know how to use up all that ground beef. Although, something that we come back to time and time again are burgers. They are especially great in the summer months because you don't even need to turn the oven on!

These burgers require 3 simple ingredients, 1 special little step, and you have yourself delicious and juicy burgers!

Why You Will love These Homemade Burger Patties
Simple - The simplicity of these homemade burger patties is like no other meal out there. Made with just a few ingredients and ready within 20 minutes. I love the sound of an easy and quick dinner.
Healthy - I love meals like burgers because you can really pick and choose how healthy you want to make them. There isn't a bunch of extra fat in these homemade burger patties. Adjusting the toppings, bun option, sides, and kind of ground beef can lead to a healthy and nutritious meal.
Flavorful - The added egg yolk in this burger patty recipe helps to add not just binding but also flavor. They turn out juicy and full of flavor. That is whether they are made on the grill or by stovetop.

Choosing the Right Ground Beef
- Local - If you can, choose ground beef from your local butcher shop. It's not only cheaper and helping out the local butcher but the quality is so much better!
- Organic - If it is available to you, buying an organic brand of ground beef will give you not just flavor but also health benefits and good quality. Similar to buying local!
- 80/20 - Using an 80/20 blend of ground beef will ensure great flavor in your burger patties.
- 80/15 - If you want flavor but something a bit leaner, 80/15 is your next best option.

Tips to Make the Best Homemade Burger Patties
Chill - After forming your burger patties, place them in the fridge for 10-20 minutes. If you are short on time, you could even place them in the freezer. You'll know they are ready to be cooked when they have a slight gloss to them, and the patties remain intact despite handling.
Heat - To keep the burger patties from falling apart, as well as having optimal flavor, turn your grill or skillet up on medium high to high heat. Allow it to get very hot before putting your homemade burger patties on. Don't flip too soon either. For a medium burger, cook for about 5 minutes on each side.
Handling - The less handling of the meat the better. It seems the more it is handled the more easily it falls apart. So, try to shape into the burger patty as quick as possible.

Burger Patty FAQs

This homemade burger patty recipe does call for an egg yolk. I couldn't believe the difference between a burger with an egg yolk verses one without. The egg yolk makes the burger so juicy which leads to more flavor. You also get a little bit more protein in your burger with the added egg! The egg yolk is also a great binder for the meat.

How to Make Homemade Burger Patties Step-by-Step
To start, combine all of the ingredients in a medium sized bowl. This includes the ground beef, salt, pepper, and egg yolks. If you desire to add additional seasoning, add it in this step as well.

Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix all the ingredients together until everything is combined into one and all is evenly distributed.

Form the burger patties using your hands. To do this, roll the meat into 4 balls then smash into about ½-3/4-inch-thick patties. Place on a parchment lined plate. You will get 4 burgers per 1 pound of ground beef.
If you have the time, place the formed patties in the fridge for 10-20 minutes. This will help keep the burger patties from falling apart.
Get your grill or your cast iron extremely hot before placing on your burger patties. Cook according to your liking. For medium, cook for about 5 minutes on each side. Keep in mind, thickness will affect this as well.
